DO WE NEED TEACHERS ANYMORE?

Teaching today has grown really challenging with the overload of information, most of it not verified, no accountability and comes from some random source. A responsible teacher generally verifies the information he/she finds either on the internet or in some book and tells the class the information only when it is authentic. The teacher wont in his/her wildest dreams say something that’s not true. He/she feels responsible for every word uttered because the young minds believe that the teacher is a superpower.

Teachers are a bundle of talent who know to work more with less. They are a package of dedication, passion and a temperament where one is happy when the student excels him/her. Teachers bring creativity, passion and emotional support to the classroom. There is warmth in the greeting in the morning, not the techy good morning from the social media (if not for these forwards, many won’t know what to do with their WhatsApp account)

‘One fit for all’ doesn’t work in a classroom where you have different understanding levels. The teachers break down complex concepts into simple facts. If a child transports himself into his wonderland or dream factory, there is this teacher who can read his eyes and bring him back and fine tune the teaching to hold hid interest by tweaking the topic on the spot, as per the students’ needs.

Which computer can understand that the little boy seated on the left has not had his breakfast that morning. Who can play Ted’s teacher who transformed into his mother by dabbing a little of the perfume left over by Ted’s mom who had passed away.

Who can be the shoulder to cry when surrounded by rude realities of the world. Who can substitute the loving teacher who gets the first sanitary napkin from the office for the young student without making her feel embarrassed. Little things that hold Himalayan value.

Every lesson is tailormade in forty different ways and presented to each child. Easy shortcuts to remember, cute little anagrams, catchy hit tunes to remember a long poem.

Teachers inculcate the values effortlessly. Weren’t we taught to follow the line, talk softly, wait for our turn, pick up bits of paper strewn on the floor without a second thought? Weren’t we comfortable sharing food, water and snacks till the advent of Covid 19?

Nothing in this world, even Alexa or Siri or the AI which is booming today, can replace a teacher.

I SALUTE EVERY TEACHER OUT THERE WHO HAS SOWN THE CHINESE BAMBOO, WAITING TO SEE ITS GLORIOUS OUTCOME BY GIVING EACH AND EVERY STUDENT HIS/HER OWN SWEET TIME TO BLOOM.
